This new edition of Western Sahara takes the story of the ongoing conflict up to the present and also looks ahead. The introductory chapter exploits historical hindsight to make politically more intelligible the constant obstacles to resolution of the conflict, not least what transpired during the prolonged and repeatedly frustrating process of identifying voters and its aftermath.
The chapters that follow chart efforts to address the dispute; to implement the original settlement plan; and, when that failed, to find an alternative way forward. They remain essential to understanding how the current stalemate arose. The concluding chapter explores the present situation and what lies beyond, reflecting the fresh dynamic created by recent events throughout the region.
